December 24th, 1:00 AM: Students cannot see course listings

An issue with student enrollment into Avenue courses has been identified. D2L is rectifying the issue.

We anticipate this to be resolved by 3pm today. We apologize for the disruption.


Holiday Closure

Importing Grades

Updates have been made to the e-Support article outlining the process of importing grades from a spreadsheet into Avenue.

Deactivating Courses

Instructors please remember to deactivate your courses. Courses are not removed from the system at the end of a term and users will continue to have access to your courses until you deactivate them.

Course Request Deadline

As Term 2 is fast approaching, we encourage instructors to complete your Term 2 course requests by December 20th to ensure your course is created for the start of the term. As a reminder, course requests take 2-3 days to process.

Due to the required processing time and McMaster's holiday closure, any courses requested after December 20th are not guaranteed to be available at the start of classes. Please submit your course request using the following link: http://avenue.mcmaster.ca/course/


UTS Technology Notice - Internet Outage

Internet and ORION networks will be inaccessible due to ORION (Ontario Research and Innovation Optical Network) network maintenance. During this timeframe McMaster will be inaccessible via Internet from anywhere outside of McMaster; however, access to McMaster resources, including DTC and MIP, from within McMaster will remain unaffected.

This maintenance is being initiated by ORION and can not be rescheduled. UTS will be monitoring and assisting with testing after the maintenance to ensure all services have been re-established.

Start Date/Time: Friday December 10, 2010 - 11:00 p.m.
End Date/Time: Saturday December 11, 2010 - 1:00 a.m.


Attention Humanities Students

Your input is critical to course development and instructor assessment processes so please log in using your Mac ID and evaluate all of your courses during the evaluation period. The evaluation period begins November 23, 2010 and has been extended to December 7th, 2010 at 4pm.

It is expected that each evaluation will take approximately 5 to 15 minutes to complete (depending on the amount of input you provide) and your responses are completely anonymous/confidential. Evaluations will not be made available to instructors until after they have submitted the final marks for the course.

All Humanities course evaluations completed by the closing date (December 7, 2010) will be entered into a randomized draw to win a brand new 32” Toshiba HD LCD Television!

Emergency Maintenance - Oct 5, 2010

Our LMS provider will be performing emergency maintenance on Tuesday Oct 5 from 1:00 AM to 5:00 AM, in order to resolve the connectivity problems we have been experiencing.

During this maintenance window access to Avenue to Learn will be unavailable.


Internet Outage - Oct 4, 2010

(Update) The connectivity issue reported earlier was corrected at approx 3:35pm and Avenue can now be accessed as usual. Our LMS provider will continue to investigate and monitor the situation.

(Earlier) We are currently experiencing connectivity problems. Our LMS provider is working on the problem and expects to have this resolved as soon as possible.


Internet Outage - Oct 3, 2010

Our LMS provider experienced a hardware failure that affected their network connectivity and resulted in a 4 hour outage of Avenue to Learn. The issue was corrected at approx 5:30pm.

We apologize for the inconvenience.


Internet Outage - September 30, 2010

McMaster's Internet Service Provider was experiencing technical problems in the early evening making Avenue unreachable. The issue was corrected at approx 9:30pm and Avenue can now be accessed as usual.


Term 2 Course Shells - September 27, 2010

As of September 27th, instructors can now request their Term 2 Fall/Winter 2010/11 course shells by submitting the form at http://avenue.mcmaster.ca/course/


Last Accessed field removed - September 17, 2010

Due to privacy concerns raised by the campus community, the 'Last Accessed' field has been removed from the Classlist tool for all users.


Update - Navigation Bar - September 9, 2010

On September 9th, our LMS provider made an unexpected change to our recently updated navigation bar setup. In order to minimize any further disruption, the decision has been made not to revert back at this time.

As September approaches, work continues on the refinements to the new Learning Management System, Avenue to Learn, in preparation to the beginning of the Fall/Winter term. 

  • Term 1 Course Shells - As of August 4, instructors can request their Fall/Winter 2010/11 course shells by submitting the form at http://avenue.mcmaster.ca/course/. Term 2 shells will be available to request at the end of September.
  • Navigation Bar – In response to faculty and staff concerns raised during training sessions, we will be updating and standardizing the navigation bar prior to the start of term. To activate any tools, please view the article at http://avenue.mcmaster.ca/help/display.php?ID=967
  • Student Enrollment - In order to allow students to see a course, it must be activated first.   Instructors can activate their Avenue to Learn course by following the instructions found in the eSupport article http://avenue.mcmaster.ca/help/display.php?ID=944

Video tutorials are now available for both instructors and students. New articles regarding tools and permissions/roles will continue to be added to the site over the next couple of weeks.    

REMEMBER that ELM will not be available after August 31, 2010. All information (e.g. marks, quizzes, course materials, etc.) must be copied (paper or digitally) prior to that date. The University will have NO mechanism to access information from the system after that date.


Update to Avenue to Learn

Avenue to Learn, the new learning management system is now in production and the migration of courses from ELM to the new system is underway. Instructors/Course designers will have access to their converted courses and their sandbox course by July 16. Students will not be enrolled in converted courses or sandbox courses. [more details]

The University is just over one month in to the migration to the new learning management system (LMS) for McMaster. The new system, produced by Desire 2 Learn, will replace ELM for the Fall 2010 term. [more details]

  • LMS Naming Contest
    As McMaster begins the process of migration from the existing E-Learn@Mac application to the newly selected Desire2Learn platform, it is fitting we choose a name for the new system.

  • Moving to Desire2Learn
    McMaster is launching a new learning management system to replace the existing ELM application.  The new system is designed by Kitchener-based Desire2Learn and will be launched in time for the start of the September academic term.  Training and more information will be provided as the change over to the new system progresses. 

 


Contest to name the new Learning Management System

As McMaster begins the process of migration from the existing E-Learn@Mac application to the newly selected Desire2Learn platform, it is fitting we choose a name for the new system. The Centre for Leadership in Learning (CLL) welcomes suggestions from all students, faculty, and staff. Please submit your name suggestion and a brief justification for your choice by April 30th, 2010. Submissions can be made via e-mail to cll@mcmaster.ca . The winning name will receive $50 in Tim Horton's gift certificates that are redeemable at any campus location. The CLL reserves the right to alter, combine or add to any of the incoming suggestions. Open forum with Centre for Leadership in Learning

The Centre for Leadership in Learning (CLL) invites members of the McMaster community to an open forum in Council Chambers (Gilmour Hall 111) on Monday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. to discuss how the campus will move forward with ELM, the campus Learning Management System. An explanation about why the system failed in both September and January as well as the plan to move forward will also be provided.
